. michelle franzen joins us, our reporter from newtown, connecticut. michelle, this is a small town, 26,000 people. a school which is highly popular because of its success, has a very good reputation. what can you tell us about the scene there now? >> reporter: well, certainly, martin, we're at the press briefing area, but it's a short distance away from the elementary school where the shooting took place this afternoon or early this morning. this afternoon we received this new briefing from law enforcement who arrived on the scene early this morning saying that they'd practiced for drills like this, but the emotions that are now enveloping this community are great, and he talks about how the community is coming together. they've already held several prayer vigils in this area. another one scheduled for tonight at 7:00. this community, of course, as you mentioned, very small community. by some standards, 26,000 people, that elementary school was only k through 4. that means 5-year-olds through 10-year-olds at that school that were exposed to this violent and tragic scene that played out tod

about the victims are beginning to emerge. nbc's michelle franzen standing by in newtown, connecticut. michelle, the names have been released. i understand that all six of the adults who were killed were women and all of the children are between the ages of 6 and 7 years old. is that correct? >> reporter: yes, that is correct. most of them, we're told, in the first grade. and certainly, we are getting a little bit more details on some of the names, of course, and soon to be the faces of these teachers, as well as the students, whose lives were taken so violently, so abruptly that school morning, yesterday morning. as you mentioned, we heard the names that have come out, but we've also heard details about the shooting and many seasoned workers, the medical examiner, the officers, the first responders here, also needing to have, you know, assistance and have counseling during this time, to give you an idea of just what a situation unfolded in that elementary school. we also have been, throughout the community here today, and there is a big outpouring of emotion, as well as

school and his mom -- where his mom was a teacher. michelle franzen just arrived at the scene. what can you tell us what about's happening on the ground there right now? >> hi, craig. we have been moved about two miles away where the briefing was held in the past hour. so we're about two miles away from the elementary school. and what we learned at that press briefing was that governor malloy is meeting with those families at this hour, comforting them. trying to prepare them for what's ahead and also investigators still back on the scene, obviously, they'll have a very dire situation to deal with in the next few hours as they enter that school, as they pour over the crime scene. we have also, also heard that they're executing several search warrants in this area. what police haven't confirmed but we're hearing from other areas at this briefing was the death toll. we're hering that the governor wanted to make sure he was with the families first. that they wanted to make sure that they have those numbers firmed up on their end and that is their priority. meeting with families here. w

sister was in another classroom and survived the shootings. nbc's michelle franzen joins me now from fairfield, connecticut, where jack pinto's funeral is now underway. michelle. >> well, that's exactly right, andrea. we are here in fairfield about 30 miles from sandy hook where noah posner's burial services are underway. they began about 1:00 today. it is that day, andrea, where we start saying good-bye to all those bright boys and girls, those faces and names that we have learned over the course of the last few days. again, you mentioned the first funerals and services. little noah was 6 years old. he is described by his uncle as smart as a whip, gentle, but having a ram bunkus streak. he leaves behind a twin sister, arielle who was in a separate class and made it out of that school on that day, and he said that his uncle said that noah considered arielle his best friend. they also have an older sister, 8-year-old sophie -- sophia, and the family members said they were all inaccept rabl during that time. in this area from fairfield, connecticut, back to newtown, jack pinto, also 6,

corner. >> nbc's michelle franzen is at the school in newtown. michelle i read a parent said we thought that newtown was the safest place in america. what is the newtown you're finding today? >> reporter: well, the newtown that we're finding today, toure, is one that's grieving. grieving for the children that were expecting to hear that we were killed and family who is are grieving as well as the families who rushed to that school early this morning to be reunited with the kids after the traumatic and tragic experience today and unfolded at the elementary school and this picturesque new england town where one road leads in to the main street and a few businesses and this elementary school sits on a hill. of course, we have heard about these shootings all around the country in the past few decades before but this shooting involves some of the youngest students that we have been hearing about. you mentioned earlier the shooter going in what we believe we're hearing in to a kindergarten room where his mom worked, opened fire there and in other areas of the school and investigators are stil
